Australian and US Tourists Arriving by Cruise Ships

Tourists from the United States and Australia still dominate cruise ships arrivals at Benoa Harbour, Denpasar.

Based on data from the PT Pelindo III Benoa, 29 foreign cruise ships, mostly from America and Australia, have arrived so far this year.

“There is expected to be 58 cruise ships visiting Benoa Harbour this year,” said general manager of PT Pelindo III Benoa, Ali Sadikin, on Monday.

During 2013 there were only 43 cruise ship arrivals recorded at Benoa.

In addition to American and Australian tourists, Europeans are also choosing to travel to Bali on cruise ships. There is also an abundance of tourists from the Netherlands arriving at Benoa.

The tourists usually come in large numbers, sometimes in the hundreds, and mostly spend a short period of time here visiting famous Bali attractions such as Ubud and Tanah Lot.

Anticipating the influx of cruise ships, the authorities are continuing to improve the readiness of the port and other facilities.

Together with the port authority, the Ministry of Sea Transportation is currently dredging and widening the port to facilitate the flow of larger cruise ships.

Larger sized vessels have had trouble docking at the port in recent times due to the size of the harbor not being big enough for them to maneuver.

In addition, a master plan for the port is still awaiting approval from the mayor of Denpasar and the Bali governor.

Within that development plan, continued Ali, there will be a 100 meter extension of the pier to the north bringing the length of the wharf to 400 meters.
